Choosing Fabric Weight for Your Project
Priya Raghavan · 5 January 2026

Fabric weight is measured in GSM — grams per square metre — and it is often the single most useful number on a spec sheet.
Under 150 gsm: lightweight
Voile, chiffon and lightweight silks fall here. They drape and move but offer little structure on their own.
150–300 gsm: medium weight
Most shirting, dress cotton and jersey sits in this band — versatile enough for the majority of garment projects.
Over 300 gsm: heavyweight
Suiting wool, canvas and upholstery velvet live here, built for structure and durability rather than drape.
